OSS Oct 2019(Jericho)

October 23 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

£2.00

The October Street-O returns again to Jericho and central Oxford. It has been planned by Ben Green and still using the specially redrawn map from last year and takes in Jericho, Central North Oxford, Oxford City Centre.

Event centre

The event centre, as for the last two years, is at The Rickety Press, 67 Cranham Street, Jericho, Oxford OX2 6DE. Rickety Press.
This year we will be based in the back of the pub. With luck the doors from Venables Close will be open. If not, please use the main entrance on Cranham St but do not run in the pub. They serve very good (and good value) food, particularly the pizza. Please consider staying for a drink and/or food after your run.

We would encourage you to arrive on foot, by bicycle or by public transport if possible. If you are coming from further afield by car, you will have to park on street. You may have to search for a suitable place and obey the Oxford street parking restrictions. This may be some way from the event centre.

Race Format

60 minute score (visit as many controls as you can and return within 60 minutes). Remember to bring a watch! Start times are between 6.30pm and 8pm, starting whenever you’re ready. See About Street-O for a more detailed description.

Once again, like last year, Ben is implementing the “touch-O” format – no pen and paper will be required. This will involve literally touching something in the area. No pen and no paper (other than the map) will be required. For this to work we of course require all runners to be scrupulously honest about their route and, of course, to remember which controls they visited when they return. If you wish to take a pen to record the controls you visit then by all means do so.

Scoring: As usual there will be 30 controls on the map with control 1x scoring 10, 2y scoring 20 and 3z scoring 30. Penalty of 10 for each minute (or part thereof) you are late coming back. Controls are scored by touching lamposts, road signs, gates, trees etc as detailed in the control descriptions which will be on the back of the map. For seasoned pros with description holders and/or connoisseurs of map folding theory, I will be trying to provide a small print version of these separately.

Map & Terrain

Map: we will be using the map I drew a couple of years ago called “Jericho and Oxford City Centre, with Grandpont”. Route choices may include sections of the canal towpath which are quite well used by commuters and, in my opinion, are safe for runners at night. Only routes shown on the map may be used – in particular, the Westgate Centre and all Colleges are out of bounds. The area will be busy with both pedestrians and vehicle traffic, including a number of major roads. Common sense and courtesy to others should be shown at all times.

Social

Food: Please stay for a drink and/or food after your run to discuss routes, mistakes, the weather or anything else that takes your fancy. The Rickety Press has kindly given us permission to use the pub as a venue for this event, and it would be nice to show our gratitude by supporting their business. They have a relatively inexpensive and good menu.
