OSS November 2017 (Oxford City Centre)
28th November 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
£2The November Street-O of 2017 will be around central Oxford and has been planned by Ben Green. The map has been redrawn specially for the event and takes in Jericho, Central North Oxford, Oxford City Centre and parts of Grandpont.
Event centre
The event centre is at The Rickety Press, 67 Cranham Street, Jericho, Oxford OX2 6DE. Rickety Press.
We would encourage you to arrive on foot, by bicycle or by public transport if possible. If you are coming from further afield by car, you will have to park on street. You may have to search for a suitable place and obey the Oxford street parking restrictions. This may be some way from the event centre.
Race Format
60 minute score (visit as many controls as you can and return within 60 minutes). Remember to bring a watch! Start times are between 6.30pm and 8pm, starting whenever you’re ready. See About Street-O for a more detailed description.
Once again, like last year, Ben is implementing the “touch-O” format – no pen and paper will be required. This will involve literally touching the letter O on street signs. No pen and no paper (other than the map) will be required. For this to work we of course require all runners to be scrupulously honest about their route and, of course, to remember which controls they visited when they return. If you wish to take a pen to record the controls you visit then by all means do so.
Map & Terrain
The map covers Jericho, Central North Oxford, Oxford City Centre and parts of Grandpont south of the river. I have redrawn it from scratch. The new Westgate Shopping Centre has reluctantly been made out of bounds, even though it does in principle offer interesting multi-level orienteering. The area will be busy with both pedestrians and vehicle traffic, including a number of major roads. Common sense and courtesy to others should be shown at all times.
Social
Food: Please stay for a drink and/or food after your run to discuss routes, mistakes, the weather or anything else that takes your fancy. The Rickety Press has kindly given us permission to use the pub as a venue for this event, and it would be nice to show our gratitude by supporting their business. They have a relatively inexpensive and good menu.
